Swayambhu or Swayambhunath, magnificently set on top of a conical hill is a great place to get your bearings, geographically and culturally. The hill commands a sweeping of the Kathmandu valley(Nepal). The complex is overrun by monkeys and pilgrims almost any time of the day. However, there are more visitors around early morning and evening. A journey to this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most definitive experiences of Kathmandu.

Mobbed by the monkeys and soaring above the city on a lofty hilltop, the “Monkey Temple” is a fascinating, chaotic jumble of Hindu and Buddhist iconography. Coming up to Swayambhunath is an intoxicating experience, with ancient cravings all over the space and the heavy smell of incense and butter lamps handing in the air. The mystical atmosphere here is heightened in the morning and evening by local devotees who make a ritual going around the stupa in the clockwise direction, spinning the prayer wheels set to its base. I SWEAR, it is a great place to watch the sunset over the Kathmandu valley. The view is splendid at dusk as the city lights flicker one by one and even better when the full moon hangs on the sky. The stupa looks even more admirable when the focus light illuminates it.

To be honest, MONKEY TEMPLE 🐒 is the place that must not be missed on a trip to Kathmandu. You will not regret going there.
